Executive Functioning Coaching

What kids face

Students who are struggling with academics, anxiety, underlying disability, or the common demands of today's society are under constant stress. They are always in fight or flight mode. When a person is in fight or flight mode they can not properly use their executive functioning skills. The three types of brain functions that executive functioning depends on: working memory, mental flexibility, and self-control.

  • Working memory governs our ability to retain and manipulate distinct pieces of information over short periods of time.

  • Mental flexibility helps us to sustain or shift attention in response to different demands or to apply different rules in different settings.

  • Self-control enables us to set priorities and resist impulsive actions or responses.

What Advoc8 does for students and families

Some people do not develop the skills as naturally or they may be delayed; those individuals need support and to be taught the skills. I will provide the necessary tools to develop the skills at home, school, and day to day functions. Through weekly sessions students are taught how to…

  • Stay on task with homework and chores.

  • Avoid distractions.

  • Develop tools to remain out of the fight or flight mode.

  • Plan, organize and execute their schoolwork in a timely manner.

  • Prioritize the steps when completing a big project.

  • Be flexible and able to see multiple solutions to a problem.

  • Manage overwhelming feelings

  • Set up and stick to a daily routine

  • Follow through to the end.

  • Budget and manage time for day-to-day responsibilities and projects.

*The fight or flight response is an automatic physiological reaction to an event that is perceived as stressful or frightening. The perception of threat activates the sympathetic nervous system and triggers an acute stress response that prepares the body to fight or flee.
